History
Randwick is named after the village of Randwick in Gloucestershire, England, the birthplace of Simeon Henry Pearce, who was Mayor of Randwick six times in the 19th century. Due to its proximity to central Sydney and the eastern beaches, Randwick has a rich history as a coveted residential area and has a number of heritage-listed handsome sandstone homes from the 1800s still standing today. The Prince of Wales Hospital is one of the largest in New South Wales, and is the end result of a consolidation process of other hospitals in the Eastern Suburbs, such as the Coast Hospital, which no longer exists on its original site at Little Bay.

Royal Randwick Racecourse is located adjacent to Kensington, the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and Centennial Park, and is found in Randwick`s most western stretches. While the suburb itself features a wide variety of commercial dining and shopping strips, its most notable examples are found around Royal Randwick Shopping Centre, and surrounding the Ritz Cinemas at the intersection of St Pauls Road and Perouse Road. Randwick Environment Park and its large lake are found in the suburb`s southeastern extremity, adjacent to South Coogee.
