Coogee is a large and popular beachside suburb in Sydney`s Eastern Suburbs. Its flagship beach is roughly half the length of Bondi Beach, but has a similar foreshore set up, with plenty of trendy restaurants and bars catering to the large crowds and locals who flock to this iconic beach, especially on warmer days.
The origin of Coogee`s name is somewhat debatable, with many believing it derives from the Aboriginal word koojah, meaning smelly place, perhaps referring to the decaying seaweed that occasionally exists on the beach at low tide. A large pleasure pier, similar to those on the English seaside, was erected in the 1920s and contained a theatre, ballroom and restaurant, but was subsequently demolished in 1934 - proving to be a bad match for the sometimes rough ocean currents.
Locals and visitors can walk directly from Coogee to Bondi Beach on the well-maintained coastal walkway that offers stunning panoramic views out across the Pacific Ocean. The renowned Wylie`s Baths is a tidal swimming pool located at the southern Coogee Headland. And after a dip in the ocean, the Coogee Pavilion and the Coogee Bay Hotel are popular spots for leisurely lunches and afternoon drinks.
