Kingsford is a mostly residential suburb, located seven kilometres southeast of Sydney's Central Business District, in the Eastern Suburbs. Being directly adjacent to the University of New South Wales (UNSW), many Kingsford residents are students; accounting for the suburb's noticeably high proportion of medium to high density apartment blocks, especially along Anzac Parade.
Formerly known as South Kensington, when made a suburb in its own right, the area was named after Sir Charles Kingsford Smith (as was Sydney Airport) - an early Australian aviator. Kingsford was originally planned to be the last stop on the Eastern Suburbs railway line, however budget cuts saw its terminus placed at Bondi Junction instead.
