Kingsford is a mostly residential suburb, located seven kilometres southeast of Sydney`s Central Business District, in the Eastern Suburbs. Being directly adjacent to the University of New South Wales (UNSW), many Kingsford residents are students; accounting for the suburb`s noticeably high proportion of medium to high density apartment blocks, especially along Anzac Parade.
Location
History
Formerly known as South Kensington, when made a suburb in its own right, the area was named after Sir Charles Kingsford Smith (as was Sydney Airport) - an early Australian aviator. The suburb was largely undeveloped until the 1920s, when it rapidly transformed into a residential suburb, with a strong Greek migrant population from the 1940s onwards. Kingsford was originally planned to be the last stop on the Eastern Suburbs railway line, however budget cuts saw its terminus placed at Bondi Junction instead. In 2020, a light rail project linking Kingsford to Sydney`s CBD opened.

The suburb`s northern portion of Anzac Parade, partly due to its closeness to UNSW, is a thriving shopping thoroughfare, with a wide array of buzzing restaurants and takeaway stores. The Juniors Kingsford, on Anzac Parade, is a large entertainment complex featuring a range of restaurants, bars, function rooms and a fitness centre. While Kingsford contains next to no green space within its borders, a wide variety of parks and reserves are located adjacent to the suburb such as Kensington Park, Paine Reserve, Rowland Park, and more.
