Maroubra is a large beachside suburb located 10 kilometres southeast of Sydney's Central Business District, in the Eastern Suburbs. Location
History
Maroubra is a local Aboriginal word translating to place of thunder. An agricultural area for much of its early history after European settlement, the suburb was redeveloped into a residential area in the 1910s. The Olympia Motor Speedway was located in South Maroubra from 1925 to 1934, but was subsequently closed due to safety concerns, and the site was reborn as Coral Sea Park - named after the WWII Battle of the Coral Sea.
