Malabar is a mostly residential coastal suburb located 12 kilometres southeast of Sydney's Central Business District, in the Eastern Suburbs. Geographically situated around Long Bay, the suburb is naturally divided by its namesake beach: with its southern portion consisting of residential streets, golf clubs and Long Bay Correctional Complex; and its northern portion primarily designated as Malabar Headland National Park.
Prior to 1931, Malabar was known as Brand or Long Bay. Before European settlement, Long Bay is believed to have been one of the primary camping/healing spots, used by local Aboriginal people between Sydney and Botany Bay. And Malabar Headland features a number of Aboriginal engravings attesting to this. The suburb's present-day name is in honour of the MV Malabar, a passenger and cargo ship that became shipwrecked in thick fog off the northern headland of Long Bay in April 1931. The ship was named after the Malabar region of the Indian state of Kerala.
Malabar Headland National Park is popular with locals and visitors for its many bushwalking trails and scenic ocean views. The inner portion of Malabar Headland is home to the New South Wales Rifle Association, and a variety of regulated shooting ranges are located within its vicinity. While the suburb's built-up southern portion is mostly residential, it also features the coastal Randwick Golf Club and Long Bay Correctional Complex - a heritage-listed maximum and minimum-security prison for men and women.
