Kensington is a mixed-use suburb located six kilometres southeast of Sydney's Central Business District, in the Eastern Suburbs. Home to The University of NSW (UNSW), The National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) and The Australian Golf Club, Kensington is also a coveted residential suburb, due to its close proximity to Sydney CBD, Centennial Park and Royal Randwick Racecourse.
Originally an industrial area, residential land was issued in the suburb in the late 19th century, and the suburb is named after Kensington, in London. Kensington Racecourse opened in 1893, but was later superseded by nearby Royal Randwick Racecourse and the land was reclaimed in the 1950s to construct Sydney's second university - The University of New South Wales. NIDA opened its Kensington campus in 1987 and has since become firmly established as one of the world's leading performing arts education centres - its alumni including Cate Blanchett, Baz Luhrmann, Mel Gibson, Hugo Weaving and more!
NIDA and UNSW are located in the suburb's southern portion, adjacent to Royal Randwick Racecourse. The Australian Golf Club - arguably Australia's most prestigious, is located in the southwestern corner of the suburb, but is accessed via Trevilyan Avenue in Rosebery. Anzac Parade features as the suburb's main shopping thoroughfare and is home to the iconic Peter's of Kensington homewares department store and the Doncaster Hotel.
