Named after the iconic park it encloses, the suburb of Centennial Park is largely comprised of parkland but also includes a small portion of highly prized residential land in its northwestern portion. The Centennial Parklands are widely considered to be the 'green lungs' of Sydney's Eastern Suburbs.
When Sydney was newly established, its water supply was largely drawn from the swamps and ponds located where today exists Centennial Park. The area was redesigned and landscaped and opened formally as a park in 1888. The first Prime Minister of Australia was sworn into office on Federation Day in January 1901 in Centennial Park.
A contemporary pavilion stands today in the park's northeastern corner, where Australia's first Prime Minister was sworn into office over a century ago. The park itself features an array of landscapes, catering to all tastes, from woodlands and ponds to formal rose gardens and sports fields. The handsome mansions overlooking the park's northwestern boundary are well worth a drive by on Lang Road.
