Darlinghurst is a lively inner-city suburb located one kilometre east of Sydney`s central business district, in the Eastern Suburbs. History
Following European settlement, the suburb was named in honour of Governor Ralph Darling`s popular wife Elizabeth Darling. The suffix `hurst` derives from the old English word hyrst, meaning wooded area. Darlinghurst`s proximity to Sydney CBD affords it a long and colourful history. For much of the 20th century, the suburb was a slum and a red light district. Since the 1980s though, Darlinghurst has undergone a process of urban renewal and is now a coveted suburb featuring a number of unique cultural precincts within it.

Oxford Street, Darlinghurst`s main thoroughfare, is best known as the centre of Sydney`s LGBTI community. The street is home to a number of popular nightclubs.
