History
Following European settlement, the suburb was named in honour of Governor Ralph Darling's popular wife Elizabeth Darling. The suffix 'hurst' derives from the old English word hyrst, meaning wooded area. Darlinghurst's proximity to Sydney CBD affords it a long and colourful history. For much of the 20th century, the suburb was a slum and a red light district. Since the 1980s though, Darlinghurst has undergone a process of urban renewal and is now a coveted suburb featuring a number of unique cultural precincts within it.
