Woolloomooloo is a harbourside inner-city suburb located east adjacent to Sydney's central business district, in the local government area of the City of Sydney. The suburb features residential and commercial areas, as well as a thriving high-dining strip on and around Woolloomooloo's revitalised Finger Wharf. The suburb is situated on Sydney Harbour, between Sydney CBD to the west, and Potts Point to the east.
The named Woolloomooloo derives from an Aboriginal word meaning 'place of plenty' or 'young black kangaroo'. Following European settlement, the area that makes up Woolloomooloo today was initially designated as a farming area before being subdivided in the 1840s and developing into an affluent residential suburb. Woolloomooloo's iconic Finger Wharf was constructed between 1911 and 1915. In the 20th century, the suburb became a somewhat working-class area but has since renewed into a coveted residential district once more.
In the mid 1990s, Woolloomooloo's finger wharf was repurposed, after decades of dereliction, into a residential and recreational site, featuring 300 apartments, a boutique hotel and a strip of fine dining restaurants and bars on its western side. The revitalised 400-metre long wharf is situated on Sydney Harbour, in Woolloomooloo's north. Andrew "Boy" Charlton pool is found on a platform on Woolloomooloo Bay's western side, adjacent to the Royal Botanic Gardens.
