Surry Hills is an inner-city suburb located immediately southeast of Sydney`s central business district, in the local government area of the City of Sydney. A dynamic and lively suburb, Surry Hills is home to a number of thriving restaurant and shopping strips and is coveted for its central location and extensive amenities. The suburb is found between Haymarket to the west and Paddington to the east.
Location
History
Following European settlement, land grants were made in the area that makes up the suburb today as early as the 1790s. The suburb is named after one of its earliest properties, Surry Hills Farm, which in turn, was named after Surrey Hills in Surrey, England. The suburb was slow to develop despite its central location, with its hilly terrain rendering it `inhospitable` for agricultural use. As a residential area in the 19th century, Surry Hills featured a mix of affluent villas and more modest working class dwellings. Central railway station opened in 1906. A working class suburb for much of the 20th century, Surry Hills was gentrified from the 1980s and exists today as a trendy and sought-after inner-city district.

Crown Street and Elizabeth Street are Surry Hills` most significant high streets, though the suburb is home to an extensive array of bars, boutiques and restaurants throughout its many smaller streets. Some of the suburb`s best-known pubs include The Clock, The Dolphin Hotel, The Beresford, The Trinity and the Strawberry Hills Hotel. Belvoir Street Theatre and the Brett Whiteley Gallery are located in Surry Hills` southern portion.
