History
The name Cronulla is derived from the Aboriginal word "Kurranulla," meaning "place of the small pink seashell." The area was first explored and mapped by Matthew Flinders and George Bass in 1796. The suburb has a rich history, with its land originally owned by Thomas Holt in the 1860s. The first public school in Cronulla opened in 1910, and the area became popular for picnics and swimming after the Illawarra railway line reached Sutherland in 1885.
