History
The suburb is named after one of its first landholdings - the 'Marrick' estate of Thomas Chalder, which was subdivided in February 1855. Chalder named his estate after his native village of Marrick, in North Yorkshire, England. In the 1850s, Thomas Holt, a wealthy Sydney business tycoon, had an impressive Victorian Gothic mansion at Marrickville. Named 'The Warren', the mansion featured elaborate stables, expansive landscaped gardens overlooking the Cooks River, an impressive art gallery and a Turkish Bath. The estate was sadly subdivided in 1884. In the early 20th century, Marrickville was largely working class, but has experienced a gradual process of gentrification since the early 2000s and is now considered a trendy and Bohemian suburb, similar in vibe to Newtown and Paddington.
