Marrickville is located seven kilometres southwest of Sydney`s Central Business District, in the Inner West region. A culturally diverse suburb found slightly to the west of Newtown, Marrickville is a bustling and convivial place to live. Its southern boundary sits on the Cooks River.
Location
History
The suburb is named after one of its first landholdings - the `Marrick` estate of Thomas Chalder, which was subdivided in February 1855. Chalder named his estate after his native village of Marrick, in North Yorkshire, England. In the 1850s, Thomas Holt, a wealthy Sydney business tycoon, had an impressive Victorian Gothic mansion at Marrickville. Named `The Warren`, the mansion featured elaborate stables, expansive landscaped gardens overlooking the Cooks River, an impressive art gallery and a Turkish Bath. The estate was sadly subdivided in 1884. In the early 20th century, Marrickville was largely working class, but has experienced a gradual process of gentrification since the early 2000s and is now considered a trendy and Bohemian suburb, similar in vibe to Newtown and Paddington.

Marrickville features a multicultural array of restaurants and bars, especially concentrated around the commercial precinct on Marrickville Road. The suburb`s largest migrant communities are Greek and Vietnamese.
