Tempe is a residential and commercial suburb located nine kilometres south of Sydney`s central business district, in the Inner West. Sitting on the banks of the Cooks River in its southwest and separated from Mascot and Sydney Airport by the Alexandra Canal, Tempe is found between Marrickville to the west and St Peters to the East. Largely a residential suburb, Tempe also has a notable commercial district, as well as a network of riverside parks.
Location
History
Following European settlement, the area that makes up the suburb today was named after Tempe House: a handsome Georgian home built in 1836 in Wolli Creek. The heritage-listed Tempe House still stands today and is one of Sydney`s finest 19th century historical homes. Harry Triguboff, the founder of Meriton Apartments, developed his first apartment block in Tempe in 1963.

Tempe Recreation Reserve and Robyn Webster Sports Centre are located in the suburb`s south, on a small peninsula surrounded by the Cooks River and Alexandra Canal. Sydney`s most centrally located Ikea store is found on the Princes Highway.
