Hurstville is a residential and commercial suburb located 16 kilometres south of Sydney`s central business district, in the local government are of the Georges River Council. Forming part of the St George area, Hurstville is sometimes known as "Sydney`s Real Chinatown" owing to its diverse Asian Australian population - roughly 37 per cent of its residents are immigrants from mainland China. Hurstville is situated between Kingsgrove to the north and South Hurstville to the south.
Location
History
The Eora tribe were the original inhabitants of the area that makes up Hurstville today. Following European settlement, the first land grants in the district were made around 1808. The area was primarily used for farming. Hurstville Municipality was incorporated in 1887, with its name derived from the English word `hurst`, meaning `a wooded eminence` and `ville`, meaning `town`. Following the establishment of railway through Sydney, Hurstville began to develop into a residential suburb in the late 1800s. In 1988, Hurstville was declared a city.
