Bexley is a large residential and commercial suburb located in southern Sydney. Located conveniently close to Botany Bay, Sydney Airport and not far from Sydney's CBD, the suburb is increasingly becoming a desirable residential locale for those looking for a slice of land near central Sydney. An impressive array of heritage buildings exists within Bexley's folds.
James Chandler bought Sylvester's Farm in the area in 1822, and proceeded to name the suburb after his birthplace, Bexley, in southeastern London. Despite being a respected local citizen, Chandler's land attracted an odd assortment of bushrangers and escaped convicts. He subsequently sold the land and it was eventually subdivided. Bexley became a largely residential suburb of Sydney following the opening of the Hurstville railway line in 1884.
Lydham Hall is the oldest surviving residence in the suburb, and is found on part of the original land grant from 1822. A pleasant array of Federation style architecture can be viewed on Bexley's many leafy residential streets. Bardwell Valley Parklands and Bexley Park are found in the suburb's northern portion, while Bexley Golf Club anchors the area's northwestern border.
