It falls within the local government area of the Sutherland Shire, commonly known as the Menai area. Geographically, Bangor is nestled south of the Georges River and west of the Woronora River, offering a serene and picturesque environment.
History
The suburb of Bangor has a rich history, with its name originating from Bangor in Wales. The name was chosen in 1895 by a farmer named Owen Jones, who was born in Bangor, Wales. To distinguish it from Bangor in Tasmania, it was renamed Menai in 1910 by the Postmaster General's Office. However, when the area of Menai expanded, the eastern section was renamed back to Bangor in 1976. The suburb's streets reflect its modern development, with an Aboriginal theme in their naming.
