Beaconsfield is a small inner-city suburb located five kilometres south of Sydney's central business district, forming part of the local government area of the City of Sydney. Formerly a largely industrial area, the suburb now features of a mix of newer residential developments. Beaconsfield forms part of the Green Square district and is found between Alexandria to the west and Rosebery to the east.
Formerly a part of the larger neighbouring suburb of Alexandria, Beaconsfield became its own suburb in 1977. The suburb was named in honour of Benjamin Disraeli, Lord Beaconsfield, a British prime minister who served during the reign of Queen Victoria. Like Alexandria, Beaconsfield was historically an industrial suburb. The Green Square urban renewal project has seen the suburb undergo a process of gentrification and urban renewal since the early 2000s. Today the suburb retains an industrial aesthetic, but also features a number of newer residential buildings and creative businesses.
Beaconsfield's primary commercial strip is based on Botany Road in its east. Green Square train station is not far from the suburb's northern border. Beaconsfield is a relatively small inner-city suburb, but features three pleasant green spaces: McConville Reserve, Beaconsfield Park and Janet Beirne Reserve.
