Zetland is a gentrified inner-city suburb found four kilometres south of Sydney's Central Business District. A recent urban renewal project, especially around the Green Square district (which is partially located in Zetland), has seen the suburb redeveloped from a primarily industrial area into a mixed-use one with retail, business and residential developments now well established.
The suburb is named after British politician Thomas Dundas, 2nd Earl of Zetland, who was a friend of New South Wales Governor Sir Hercules Robinson. A wetland area originally, the suburb's lagoon and swamp were drained in the early 1900s to create space for the Victoria Park racecourse. After almost 50 years of operation, the racecourse was closed after WWII and the area became a mostly industrial and manufacturing district. From the late 1990s, the area has gradually morphed into a mixed-use residential and commercial suburb, with the Green Square Precinct, in particular, having changed the suburb's flavour and desirability significantly.
The newly opened Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreational Centre offers locals a world-class swimming and sports facility, as well as much-needed recreational and green space, in a part of Sydney that is largely short on it. The Centre is found at 17 Zetland Ave, Zetland. A few smaller parks are scattered throughout the centre of the suburb and shops, restaurants, a Coles supermarket and a Virgin Active gym are located in the East Village Shopping Centre in Zetland's northeastern corner.
