Waterloo is an inner-city suburb located three kilometres south of Sydney's Central Business District. The suburb has been subject to a rapid process of gentrification in recent years, with high-rise apartment buildings now the dominant feature of its skyline. Its close proximity to the CBD, as well as other trendy inner-city suburbs makes Waterloo an attractive place to live for younger first homebuyers and students.
The suburb is named after the Battle of Waterloo; an early 19th century British military conquest over French forces led by Napoleon Bonaparte. Waterloo was mostly an industrial and working-class suburb up until the early 2000s, which saw it rapidly redeveloped into an up and coming high-density residential and business district. The suburb has also become a popular place to live for Sydney's gay and lesbian community, thanks to its closeness to Darlinghurst, Oxford Street and Surry Hills.
The urban renewal precinct of Green Square is partly found in Waterloo's southwestern portion. The suburb's industrial aesthetic is still prevalent in its southern half, while a mix of workers cottages and high-rise residential towers dominate its northern side, adjacent to Redfern and Moore Park.
