Waterloo is an inner-city suburb located three kilometres south of Sydney`s Central Business District. History
The suburb is named after the Battle of Waterloo; an early 19th century British military conquest over French forces led by Napoleon Bonaparte. Waterloo was mostly an industrial and working-class suburb up until the early 2000s, which saw it rapidly redeveloped into an up and coming high-density residential and business district. The suburb has also become a popular place to live for Sydney`s gay and lesbian community, thanks to its closeness to Darlinghurst, Oxford Street and Surry Hills.

The urban renewal precinct of Green Square is partly found in Waterloo`s southwestern portion.
