Matraville is a primarily residential and commercial suburb located nine kilometres southeast of Sydney`s Central Business District, in the Eastern Suburbs. Its nearest ocean beaches are Malabar Beach and Maroubra Beach and the suburb also sits adjacent to Malabar Headland National Park and Heffron Park. Location
History
Matraville is named in honour of James Matra, an American sailor who was a midshipman on the voyage by Captain James Cook to Botany Bay in 1770. Among others, Matra encouraged the British government to establish a colony at Botany Bay, resulting in the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788. In the early 20th century, Matraville was a popular residential suburb for returned war veterans, and many of its streets and public features are named in honour of ANZAC history. Most recently, the suburb has experienced a process of gentrification, thanks to its convenient proximity to Sydney`s CBD, as well as the University of NSW and the beaches of the Eastern Suburbs.

The suburb`s main commercial strip is found in the northern portion of Bunnerong Road, and features a Woolworths store, as well as an Irish & British convenience store. Matraville`s key green spaces are Barwon Park, located centrally, and Purcell Park, found in the suburb`s western portion. The Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park is a large cemetery and crematorium located in Matraville`s southwestern triangle, located within close reach of Yarra Bay. The Memorial Park incorporates Botany Cemetery, Eastern Suburbs Crematorium and Pioneer Park, where some of Sydney`s oldest graves are found.
