Little Bay is a coastal suburb located 14 kilometres southeast of Sydney's Central Business District, in the Eastern Suburbs. Mostly a residential suburb, Little Bay is also home to Little Bay Beach, some coastal national park, as well as a few golf clubs and a buzzing cafe precinct.
Little Bay was originally called Yarra Junction, but had its name changed after residents successfully petitioned for a new suburb name, with post mail destined for Yarra Junction often ending up in the State of Victoria. In the late 19th century, the suburb was used as a quarantine facility for smallpox and bubonic plague outbreaks. The suburb had its own hospital - The Coast Hospital, up until 2001, when services were transferred to the Prince of Wales Hospital, and the site was redeveloped as a residential complex. In 1969, international artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude wrapped 2.4 kilometres of Little Bay's coastline in plastic fabric - a temporary installation/environmental artwork titled Wrapped Coast.
Little Bay Beach is fairly little as far as Eastern Suburbs beaches go, and is aptly located in the little bay that sits geographically in the northern coastal portion of the suburb. Little Bay's retail precinct is concentrated around the intersection of Anzac Parade and Pine Avenue. The Coast Golf and Recreation Club and St Michael's Golf Club are found in the suburb's southern portion, and both afford panoramic views out across the Pacific Ocean.
