La Perouse is a well-visited suburb at the southernmost tip of Sydney's Eastern Suburbs. The La Perouse peninsula is the northern headland of Botany Bay, with Kurnell, located opposite, the bay's southern headland. Popular for its oceanside national parklands, secluded swimming beaches and other tourist sites, La Perouse is well known by Sydney-siders and visitors alike.
La Perouse is one of only a few Sydney suburbs to have a French name, the others being Vaucluse and Sans Souci. The suburb is named after the French navigator Jean-François de Galaup, comte de Lapérouse, who landed on the shores of Botany Bay just a few days after the first fleet arrived from England. Despite popular myth, the French had never intended to "claim" Australia as their own; Lapérouse's ship landed in Botany Bay for respite, having endured an attack and fatalities in the Navigator Islands in Samoa prior to their arrival in Botany Bay.
La Perouse point features stunning panoramic views over Botany Bay, as well as an array of historic structures including the La Perouse Museum, The Barrack Tower and the Bare Island Fortress (accessed via a short bridge from the mainland). A smattering of popular seafood restaurants lies adjacent, overlooking Frenchmans Bay. The majority of the La Perouse peninsula is national park, and features an extensive network of bushwalking trails, as well as the popular swimming beaches Congwong Beach and Little Congwong Beach.
