La Perouse is a popular suburb at the southernmost tip of Sydney's Eastern Suburbs. The La Perouse peninsula is the northern headland of Botany Bay, with Kurnell, located opposite, the bay's southern headland. La Perouse is one of only a few Sydney suburbs to have a French name, the others being Vaucluse and Sans Souci. The suburb is named after the French navigator Jean-François de Galaup, comte de Lapérouse, who landed on the shores of Botany Bay just a few days after the first fleet arrived from England. Despite popular myth, the French had never intended to "claim" Australia as their own; Lapérouse's ship landed in Botany Bay for respite, having endured an attack and fatalities in the Navigator Islands in Samoa prior to their arrival in Botany Bay.
