Carlton is a suburb in southern Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, located 15 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district. It is part of the St George area and lies across the boundary of two local government areas: the Georges River Council and the Bayside Council.
History
Originally a heavily timbered area, Carlton has a history dating back to 1808 when it was part of a 1,950-acre grant made to Captain John Townson. The suburb began to develop with the opening of the railway line to Hurstville in 1884, but it wasn't until 1889 that Carlton had its own platform. Landholders contributed to the construction of the platform and station buildings, and in return, they received a block of land and a first-class ticket to Sydney for one year.
