Blakehurst is a waterside residential suburb located 18 kilometres south of Sydney`s central business district, in the local government area of the Georges River Council. Blakehurst sits on a peninsula surrounded on three sides by the Georges River, affording many of its homes tranquil vistas over the water. Tom Uglys Bridge, in Blakehurst`s south, connects the suburb to Sylvania in the greater southern region of Sydney. The suburb is situated between Carrs Park to the east and South Hurstville to the west. Blakehurst enjoys proximity to Botany Bay.
Location
History
William Blake operated a farm in the area that makes up Blakehurst today, having been leasing granted land that was established in 1808. The suburb is named after Blake. A punt was established at Tom Uglys Point to connect the Blakehurst to further suburbs to the south across the Georges River. Tom Uglys Bridge replaced the punt service, and was opened in 1929. A second bridge was constructed in 1987 to allow for more convenient traffic flow across the river.
