Kogarah is a residential and commercial suburb located 14 kilometres south of Sydney's central business district. The suburb is considered the centre of the St George area. History
Following European settlement, some of the first land grants in the area were made in 1808. The district initially provided oysters, fruit and vegetables for Sydney. The suburb took its name around 1880, when the railway line was established, and is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning "rushes" or "place of reeds". Kogarah Station opened in 1884 and the suburb was officially made a municipality in 1885.
