Kogarah is a residential and commercial suburb located 14 kilometres south of Sydney`s central business district. The suburb is considered the centre of the St George area. Kogarah is home to a bustling commercial district, as well as the St George hospital campus. The suburb`s eastern parklands enjoy proximity to Botany Bay. Kogarah is found between Rockdale to the north and Ramsgate to the south.
Location
History
Following European settlement, some of the first land grants in the area were made in 1808. The district initially provided oysters, fruit and vegetables for Sydney. The suburb took its name around 1880, when the railway line was established, and is derived from an Aboriginal word meaning "rushes" or "place of reeds". Kogarah Station opened in 1884 and the suburb was officially made a municipality in 1885.

Kogarah`s central commercial district is found between Kogarah Station and the St George Hospital complex. The suburb`s outer areas are largely residential. Kogarah`s eastern strip, closest to Botany Bay, is home to an uninterrupted network of parkland including Civic Avenue Reserve, Scarborough Park and Leo Smith Reserve.
