History
Following European settlement, the area that makes up Bellevue Hill today was originally known by Irish-Australian immigrants as "Vinegar Hill" after the Battle of Vinegar Hill, an anti-British uprising. Governor Lachlan Macquarie took exception to this and instead named the suburb Bellevue Hill, belle vue meaning beautiful view in French. The suburb`s earliest stately mansions were built in the mid-19th century, with many still standing today such as Ginahgulla, Caerleon and Rona.
