Bellevue Hill is an affluent residential suburb located five kilometres east of Sydney's central business district, in the Eastern Suburbs. Coveted for its blue-ribbon real estate, commanding views of Sydney Harbour and surrounding areas, and its lush tree-lined streets, Bellevue Hill is one of Sydney's most prestigious suburbs. The suburb is a stone's throw from Rose Bay's waterfront and is found between Point Piper to the north and Bondi Junction to the south.
Following European settlement, the area that makes up Bellevue Hill today was originally known by Irish-Australian immigrants as "Vinegar Hill" after the Battle of Vinegar Hill, an anti-British uprising. Governor Lachlan Macquarie took exception to this and instead named the suburb Bellevue Hill, belle vue meaning beautiful view in French. The suburb's earliest stately mansions were built in the mid-19th century, with many still standing today such as Ginahgulla, Caerleon and Rona.
Bellevue Hill features a quaint village-style shopping strip on Bellevue Road, in the suburb's south, not far from the lush rainforest foliage of Cooper Park. The suburb's northern border is found adjacent to Point Piper and within 50 metres of Rose Bay's waterfront at Bellamy Beach.
