Point Piper is an affluent harbourside suburb located six kilometres east of Sydney's central business district, in the Eastern Suburbs. Following European settlement, the suburb was named after Captain John Piper, who arrived in New South Wales in 1792 and built a neo-Palladian mansion in the present-day suburb in 1816. The suburb has historically always been a well-heeled area, with its proximity to central Sydney and its unrivalled waterside location proving to be perennially coveted features. Wolseley Road, in Point Piper's west, was ranked the world's ninth most expensive street in 2011.
Seven Shillings Beach, in the suburb's southwest, continues on into Double Bay.
