Potts Point is a small thriving inner city suburb located two kilometres east of Sydney`s Central Business District. The Kings Cross locality is found within Potts Point, famous for its well-known Coca Cola sign and dynamic night life. While Potts Point is a harbourside suburb, the Royal Australian Navy - whose Garden Island base is found here, occupies most of the suburb`s waterside foreshore.
Location
History
The suburb is named after Joseph Hyde Potts, one of Sydney`s early 19th century European free settlers, who purchased land in the area, which at the time was known as Woolloomooloo Hill. Prior to becoming a Bohemian neighbourhood and red light district, Potts Point was a largely well-heeled residential area in the 1800s, with a number of generously sized Georgian mansions built along the high point of the suburb`s ridgeline.

The portion of Darlinghurst Road north of the Coca-Cola sign, up until the El-Alamein Memorial Fountain is Potts Point`s better known nightlife strip. Considered Sydney`s most notable red light district, the strip is home to a numbers of strip bars, nightclubs and brothels, however recent years have seen it become the subject of gentrification and renewal. Victoria Street and Bayswater Road are also thriving commercial strips, home to a number of trendy bars and restaurants. The section of Macleay Street leading down towards the harbour and Garden Island is well known for its refined wining and dining scene.
