History
The suburb is named after Joseph Hyde Potts, one of Sydney's early 19th century European free settlers, who purchased land in the area, which at the time was known as Woolloomooloo Hill. Prior to becoming a Bohemian neighbourhood and red light district, Potts Point was a largely well-heeled residential area in the 1800s, with a number of generously sized Georgian mansions built along the high point of the suburb's ridgeline.
