Penshurst is a suburb located in southern Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is situated 17 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district and is part of the St George area. The suburb features low to medium-density housing and is known for its residential character.
History
Penshurst was named after Penshurst, Kent, England. The land was originally part of a grant to Robert Townson (1763–1827) and was acquired in 1830 by John Connell, who left it to his grandsons J.C. and E.P. Laycock. The area was known as Connell's Bush before being subdivided by the Laycocks. The western part of the land was sold to Thomas Sutcliffe Mort. Timber-cutting and small farming were early activities in the area. The Penshurst railway station opened on 17 May 1890, contributing to the suburb's development.
