Known in the past as Mort`s Road, Mort`s Hill, Mort`s Crossing, Mort`s Township and Mort Dale, the surburb was named after Thomas Sutcliffe Mort, a famous Sydney industrialist who purchased the land in the early 19th century when it was part of the larger Hurstville municipality. It was predominantly rural land used for farming and orchards. Over time, residential development took place, and Mortdale transformed into a suburban area.
