Engadine is a suburb located in southern Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is situated 33 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district and falls within the local government area of the Sutherland Shire. Engadine is bordered by the Royal National Park to the east and Heathcote National Park to the west, offering stunning natural landscapes.
History
The area of Engadine was originally reserved for a national park in 1879. However, in 1890, Charles McAlister purchased land here, naming it 'Engadine' after the Engadin Valley in Switzerland, due to the similarity in wildflowers and natural beauty. The land was subdivided after 1900, and Engadine developed as a destination for camping and day trips. The suburb grew significantly after the railway station was built in 1920, with many ex-soldiers settling here post-World War I.
