Caringbah is a suburb in Southern Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is situated 24 kilometres (15 miles) south of the Sydney central business district in the local government area of Sutherland Shire. History
The name "Caringbah" is derived from an Aboriginal word in the Kumbainggar language, meaning a pademelon wallaby. Originally called Highfield, the suburb's name was changed to Caringbah in 1911 with the commencement of steam tram operations between Cronulla and Sutherland. The area was predominantly used for market gardening from the 1880s and continued to be used for orchards and farming until after World War II. The railway line to Cronulla, which opened in 1939, played a significant role in the suburb's development.
