Bondi Beach is a beachside residential and recreational suburb located seven kilometres east of Sydney's central business district, in the Eastern Suburbs. Named after its world famous beach, Bondi Beach, along with the neighbouring suburbs of North Bondi and Bondi, form the greater Bondi area. Location
History
Bondi derives its name from the Aboriginal word boondi meaning "surf" or "water breaking over rocks". Following European settlement, the area surrounding and including Bondi Beach was initially designated as private land. In 1882, the Municipal Council acquired this land and Bondi Beach became a public beach. The first surf bathing sheds were opened in 1903.
