Tamarama is small beachside suburb located seven kilometres east of Sydney's central business district, in the Eastern Suburbs. A relatively boutique sized suburb; Tamarama is found between Bondi to the north and Bronte to the south. The suburb's namesake beach is a small but popular one and is found to the south, adjacent to Bronte. Marks Park, located on Tamarama's eastern headland, is notable as a primary site for the periodic Sculpture by the Sea art installation. The suburb's real estate is coveted for its ocean views and central location in the Eastern Suburbs.
Location
History
Following European settlement, the area that makes up the suburb today was originally known as Dixon Bay. The suburb began to be known as Tamarama in 19th century and its name is likely derived from the Aboriginal name 'Gamma Gamma', possibly meaning 'storm'. Tamarama was home to Sydney's first coastal amusement park, which opened in 1887. Featuring a roller coaster on the beach, an aquarium and suspended airship, Wonderland City - as it was known - closed in 1911 and the NSW Government bought the area and repurposed it as Tamarama Park.
