waverley is a residential suburb located seven kilometres east of sydney's central business district, in the eastern suburbs. enjoying proximity to sydney's eastern beaches, waverley is found between queens park to the west and bronte to the east. the suburb's main shopping strip is found on bronte road, between charing cross and the intersection of bronte road and albion street. waverley is directly adjacent to queens park and waverley oval, the latter of which is located in the neighbouring suburb of bondi junction.

History
the suburb derives its name from one of its earliest homes - waverley house, which in turn, was named after the book waverley, by sir walter scott. waverley was proclaimed a municipality in 1859. a number of grand victorian mansions were built in the area in the 19th century, with many still standing today. the cliff-side waverley cemetery, located in present-day bronte, was established in 1877 and offers visitors peaceful and spectacular views across the pacific ocean.

the charing cross hotel and the robin hood hotel are waverley's most notable pubs, and both are found at charing cross - the six-way intersection where bronte road, carrington road and victoria street meet. the oceanside waverley cemetery is not far from the suburb's southeastern border.
