St Peters is a mixed-zone suburb located seven kilometres south of Sydney's central business district, in the local government area of the Inner West Council. The suburb features a residential and commercial portion in its northwest and an industrial portion in its southeast, with the Princes Highway separating the two areas. St Peters sits on the Alexandra Canal is and is found between Marrickville to the west and Mascot to the east.
The suburb is named after St Peters Anglican Church, which was consecrated in the area that makes up the suburb today in 1838. The church is the third oldest Anglican Church in Sydney and is also believed to be the first church built in Australia not using convict labour. St Peters was a significant brickmaking centre in the late 19th century and four towering chimneys that carried exhaust from the suburb's brick kilns remain today and have been incorporated as historical features into Sydney Park in neighbouring Alexandria.
The expansive Sydney Park is found adjacent to St Peters' eastern border. St Peters itself features three smaller green spaces in its northern portion: Camdenville Oval, Simpson Park and the grounds of St Peters Anglican Church. St Peters train station is found in the suburb's northeastern corner.
