South Coogee is a coastal residential suburb located nine kilometres southeast of Sydney's Central Business District. As its name suggests, the suburb is found adjacent to Coogee's southern border. The suburb is prized for its ocean view real estate and laid-back vibe and sits roughly at the halfway point between Maroubra Beach and Coogee Beach.
While geographically close to Coogee, South Coogee has over time developed a slightly different atmosphere and vibe to its better-known namesake neighbour. The suburb is considerably more family-friendly and laid-back in comparison to the hustle and bustle of Coogee. While Coogee's popularity has seen many of its single home dwellings lost to low-density apartment blocks, much of South Coogee is still made up of free standing homes, with those on the water front commanding the best views and the highest property prices. Randwick Cemetery was established in the area in 1874 and features an array of historical tombstones and burial plots.
Primarily a residential suburb, South Coogee features a small selection of cafes and shops on Malabar Road, including Bakehouse South Coogee and The Lion and Buffalo.
