Port Botany is found 12 kilometres southeast of Sydney`s Central Business District, on Botany Bay. The suburb is almost entirely occupied by the Port Botany Seaport - one of Australia`s largest container ports and administered by NSW Ports. The suburb does however contain a small triangle of green space on the northern tip of Yarra Bay Beach, adjacent to the Eastern Suburbs Memorial Park.
Location
History
It is rather symbolic that one of Australia`s largest seaports is located on the bay where the First Fleet arrived over 200 years ago. Before 1960, almost all of Sydney`s international shipping docks were found in Sydney Harbour (Port Jackson) - mostly at Darling Harbour, Walsh Bay, Glebe Island and White Bay. Following the advent of containerization shipping in the 1950s, Sydney required additional port facilities to cater to new cargo vessels. Port Botany was subsequently established as a commercial shipping port in 1971, and was expanded significantly over the following decades, with its latest additions having been made operational in 2013.
Points of Interest
As the suburb is almost entirely monopolised by its namesake seaport, Port Botany is largely closed to public access. With that said, visitors may access Molineux Point and its lookout by car on Prince of Wales Drive, which runs along the suburb`s southeastern foreshore. This scenic spot offers almost 3600 views across Botany Bay and through the heads out to the Pacific Ocean.
