Phillip Bay is a quaint bayside suburb located thirteen kilometres southeast of Sydney's Central Business District, immediately north of La Perouse. The suburb is primarily residential, but also features Yarra Bay Beach, a sailing club and a large expanse of coastal bush land. Enjoying a homely, small town feel, Phillip Bay is popular for its laid back ambiance, while still remaining within close reach of central Sydney and the eastern beaches.
Location
History
Aboriginal people lived at Phillip Bay prior to European settlement, and a camp was established in the suburb in 1883, under the Aborigines Protection Board. Yarra Bay, upon which the suburb sits, was where the First Fleet anchored when it arrived in Botany Bay on 18 January 1788. The suburb is named after Captain Arthur Phillip, who was in charge of HMS Supply on this inaugural expedition. After assessing the land in the area, Phillip concluded that the site was 'unsuitable for habitation', largely due to a lack of freshwater, fertile soil and deeper ocean water ideal for anchoring large ships. The Fleet subsequently relocated to Sydney Cove, in Port Jackson, approximately a week later.

Yarra Bay Beach is found on the western side of the suburb, and Yarra Bay is a popular sailing spot, with Yarra Bay Sailing Club operating at the southern end of the foreshore. The suburb's built-up residential streets are concentrated in Phillip Bay's southern portion, adjacent to La Perouse, while its northern portion is largely bush and parkland. Yarra Bay Bicentennial Park and Yarra Oval Sportsfields are accessed from Kooringai Avenue and Yarra Road respectively.
