Pagewood is located eight kilometres south of Sydney's Central Business District, in the southern portion of the Eastern Suburbs. A mixed residential and industrial suburb, Pagewood also contains an extensive array of parkland, with Bonnie Doon Golf Club located in the suburb, as well as part of The Lakes Golf Club.
Originally planned as a garden suburb like nearby Daceyville, Pagewood rapidly developed as a residential suburb following WWI due to a shortage of residential land in the area. The suburb was named in honour of Fred Page, Mayor of Botany Council, in 1929 shortly after Page's death. National Studios was established in the suburb in 1935, producing Australian, British and American cinema for almost 30 years before its closure. The site was taken over by General Motors Holden, which operated a car manufacturing plant in the suburb until 1981. In 1960, local residents campaigned to retain the suburb's name, after the council considered changing the area's name to "East Botany". Botany was quickly becoming an industrial area and local residents preferred for their mostly residential suburb not to be associated with it.
Pagewood's built-up streets are primarily residential, with shopping strips found adjacent in nearby suburbs - Westfield Eastgardens sits beside Pagewood's southeastern border. The suburb is home to three significant parks: Mutch Park; Jellicoe Park; and Gaiarine Gardens. The prestigious Bonnie Doon Golf Club is located in the centre of the suburb's eastern portion, while the Lakes Golf Club is partially within Pagewood's western extremities, next to Mill Stream.
