Monterey is a bayside suburb located 15 kilometres south of Sydney's central business district. Sitting on the western shores of Botany Bay, the suburb is part of the St George area. Monterey is found between Brighton-Le-Sands to the north and Ramsgate Beach to the south. The suburb is bounded by Lady Robinsons Beach and Cook Park in the east and Scarborough Park in the west. Monterey is coveted for its idyllic waterside lifestyle.
Location
History
Following European settlement, Monterey was initially a part of the neighbouring suburbs of Brighton-Le-Sands and Ramsgate. Scarborough Park, in the suburb's west was originally a swamp. As the district developed, a number of streets were named after Californian locations: Hollywood Street, Pasadena Street, Monterey Street and Culver Street among them. Monterey was officially gazetted as its own suburb in 1972. The 1987 music video for Mental As Anything's single "He's just no good for you" was filmed in Scarborough Street.
