Lugarno is a charming suburb situated in the St George area of southern Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is located approximately 23 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district and falls within the local government area of the Georges River Council. History
The area now known as Lugarno was originally inhabited by the Dharug people, an Aboriginal Australian people. European settlement began in the early 19th century when land grants were made to settlers in the 1830s and 1850s. The suburb was named after Lake Lugano in Switzerland by surveyors Major Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell and William Govett in 1843, with an extra 'r' added to the name.
Lugarno remained a semi-rural area with weekender cottages until the 1960s when it was developed into a primarily residential suburb. The opening of the Alfords Point Bridge in 1973 significantly improved access to the area, further accelerating its growth and development.
