It is located 22 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the Sutherland Shire. The suburb is situated on a peninsula on the southern bank of the Georges River and is surrounded by the suburb of Sylvania, sharing the same postcode.
History
The traditional owners of Kangaroo Point peninsula are the Dharawal Aboriginal people, with archaeological evidence such as middens and rock shelters found in the area. European settlement saw the peninsula acquired by John Connell Laycock as a Crown grant, and later by Thomas Holt, a prominent landowner. The area was initially part of Sylvania and was mostly vacant bushland before being subdivided in 1916.
