Location
History
The suburb is named after Elizabeth Macquarie, the wife of Lachlan Macquarie, Governor of New South Wales from 1810 to 1821. Elizabeth Bay House, a handsome Regency style mansion, was completed in 1837, and is a rare example of early Australian colonial architecture still in existence and in near perfect condition today. The house was originally surrounded by a lush 22-hectare garden, which has since been reclaimed as well-heeled residential land. Beare Park, at the bottom of Ithaca Road, offers locals and visitors a boutique-parcel of harbour-front parkland.

The original Elizabeth Bay House is now open to the public as a museum, and a charmingly landscaped garden (Arthur McElhone Reserve) with koi pond now fronts this stately home, offering visitors postcard views of Sydney Harbour.
