Darlington is a small suburb located three kilometres south of Sydney`s central business district, in the local government area of the City of Sydney. The suburb is the smallest municipality in the Sydney metropolitan region and while Darlington is a residential suburb, it is also home to a number of buildings which form part of the University of Sydney. The suburb is situated between Chippendale to the north and Eveleigh to the south, enjoying proximity to Sydney`s CBD, Redfern train station, and the University of Sydney`s main campus.
The original inhabitants of the area that makes up Darlington today were the Cadigal people of the Eora nation. Following European settlement, in 1789, the area was allocated for church and school usage. Fruit and flower farms were also developed in the suburb. In the 1950s, the University of Sydney expanded with into Darlington, with a number of the campuses` buildings and facilities now based in the suburb. Darlington`s residential and commercial buildings became subject to urban renewal in the 1990s.
Darlington`s residential and commercial areas are largely found in its east, while the University of Sydney`s buildings and facilities in the suburb are situated in Darlington`s northwest. The suburb is adjacent to Redfern train station and the multi-purpose Carriageworks Facility.
