Botany is an industrial and residential suburb located on Sydney's Botany Bay, with Sydney Airport located adjacent to the suburb's western border. Its Botany Bay foreshore is almost entirely fronted by Sir Joseph Banks Park. The suburb shares its name with neighbouring Port Botany - one of Australia's largest container ports.
Botany is located on Botany Bay, where Captain James Cook first landed in Australia on 29 April 1770. Cook originally referred to Botany Bay in his journals as Sting Rays' Harbour and Botanist Bay before settling on the bay's current name. The suburb has a long history as an industrial precinct, which it continues to largely serve as today thanks to its close proximity to the Port Botany seaport. Despite this, the suburb was home to a private zoo in 1850.
Sir Josephs Banks Park comprises the Foreshore Reserve and the Sir Joseph Banks Pleasure Gardens. Fronting most of Botany's bay foreshore, this delightful strip of parkland offers locals and visitors 28 hectares of lush greenery in what is otherwise, a largely industrial area.
