History
Botany is located on Botany Bay, where Captain James Cook first landed in Australia on 29 April 1770. Cook originally referred to Botany Bay in his journals as Sting Rays' Harbour and Botanist Bay before settling on the bay's current name. The suburb has a long history as an industrial precinct, which it continues to largely serve as today thanks to its close proximity to the Port Botany seaport. Despite this, the suburb was home to a private zoo in 1850.
