History
The Bediagal people were the original inhabitants of the area that forms Bankstown today. Prior to European settlement, Bankstown was largely occupied by Cumberland Planes Woodland and Turpentine Ironbark forest. A pioneer colony was established by Governor Hunter in 1795 and named Bank's Town after Sir Joseph Banks, who travelled to Australia with Captain James Cook in 1770.
