Banksia is a residential suburb located 12 kilometres south of Sydney`s central business district, in the St George region. Found between Arncliffe to the north and Brighton-Le-Sands to the south, the suburb enjoys convenient proximity to Botany Bay and Sydney Airport. Banksia Station is serviced by the T4 Illawarra and Eastern Suburbs railway line. Muddy Creek, off the Cooks River, acts as Banksia`s natural eastern border.
Location
History
Banksia is named in honour of Joseph Banks, a botanist who first visited Botany Bay in 1770 on the Voyage of Discovery of James Cook. Following European settlement, the area that makes up the suburb today formed part of Simeon Pearce`s 1850s landholding, which stretched from present-day Rockdale to Brighton-Le-Sands. Banksia was heavily timbered up until the 1880s when it was subdivided and began to develop as a residential area. Banksia railway station opened in 1906 and Banksia Post Office opened in 1924.

Banksia is largely a residential suburb, but features a commercial strip on the Princes Highway, adjacent to Banksia Station. The suburb is bookmarked by Gardiner Park in the west and Barton Park in the east (on the banks of Muddy Creek).
