Arncliffe is a residential suburb located 11 kilometres south of Sydney's central business district, in the local government area of the Bayside Council. Sitting on the western banks of the Cooks River, Arncliffe is found between Wolli Creek to the north and Banksia to the south. The suburb enjoys convenient proximity to Botany Bay and Sydney Airport. While the suburb is largely residential, there are small pockets of commercial and light industrial developments in its central and northern portions.
The suburb is named after the village of Arncliffe in North Yorkshire, England. Following European settlement, the area that makes up the suburb today was developed in the 19th century. In its early days, Arncliffe was a picturesque rural district and its market gardens led it to be known as "Sydney's vegetable garden". Arncliffe railway station opened in 1884.
Arncliffe Park is found in the suburb's northwest, not far from Arncliffe Station. The expansive Riverine Park and Kogarah Golf Club are located in Arncliffe's east, on the banks of the Cooks River.
