Stanmore is a residential suburb located six kilometres southwest of Sydney`s central business district, in the local government area of the Inner West Council. The suburb features a long strip of specialty stores on its northern border on Parramatta Road (the Great Western Highway). Stanmore is situated in the Inner West, between Annandale to the north and Enmore to the south.
Location
History
The original inhabitants of the area that makes up Stanmore today were the Gadigal clan of the Eora people. Following European settlement, land grants in the district were first made between 1793 and 1810. A saddler, John Jones, who developed the Stanmore Estate in 1835 on land where Newington College now stands, named the suburb. Jones named it after his hometown of Stanmore in England. Initially a farming area, with the opening of Stanmore railway station in 1878, the suburb developed into a residential area. Newington College`s present day campus opened in Stanmore in 1881.
